Henan Institute of Medical Sciences, the only comprehensive multi-disciplined medical scientific organization under the jurisdiction of Henan Province, is the second-rank unit with independent qualification of juridical person subject to both Zhengzhou University and the Henan Department of Science and Technology. The institute was established in 1962 with a glorious history of 43 years up to date. It consists of nine research divisions such as oncological pathology, liver diseases, pharmacology, pharmaco-chemistry, lung and heart diseases, nutrition and food, immunology and microorganization, endocriminology and electroscopy, and so on. The institute has become the national base of clinical pharmacology under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Public Health since 1983. Furthermore, the Key Laboratory of Pharmacology for Liver Diseases has been set up in the institute since 2004. The institute is usually engaged in such professional studies as basic medicine, disease control, and public technological service, especially research and development of new drugs. A total of 130 persons are recorded in the archives of the institute and 126 are on duty regularly. Of these, 8 are research fellows, 26 research associates, and 56 research assistants, or with other equivalent professional titles. Among the personnel, 91.9 % belong to special technological persons. It is well known that there are four experts conferred and administered by the central government and two by the provincial government in the institute. For another, we have one tutor of students in doctor course and 11 tutors of students in master course in the institute. Some experts hold important social professions, for example, there are eight members for evaluating new drugs in Henan Province, five standing members in certain medical associations, seven chairmen or vice-chairmen in some provincial professional associations, three potential experts in the State Natural Sciences funds (One of them is standing appraiser.), 28 potential appraisers for achievements of science and technology in Henan Province, and two members in the Academic Committee of Henan Academy of Medical Sciences.

  The institute has currently carried out 40 research terms assigned by national or provincial authorities. Of these, two belong to the international collaborative studies, two the national “863” plan, two State Natural Sciences Funds, one national key study, one national new drugs funds, eight provincial key studies. Our work has got plentiful achievements. Among these, one is at national level, 27 are at provincial level, and 23 at municipal level.
