Brief Introduction to the Department of Mathematics of

Zhengzhou University

The Department of Mathematics of Zhengzhou University was founded in 1956,and then, with the development of the discipline its name was changed into the Department of System Science and Mathematics in 1987. The department has had the strong backing of the teachers and advanced teaching equipment, complete books and reference materials for over 40 years' development. The environment for teaching work and scientific research is elegant. Thus it has become the important base for cultivating the compound qualified personnel of mathematics and science. There are 62 full-time teachers in the department, among whom 45 are professors and associate professors, 5 supervisors of Ph. D candidates, 1 middle-aged specialist with outstanding contributions to China, 8 worthy specialists directly under the jurisdiction of the provincial government, 3 fine teachers at the national level and 3 model workers in the educational system.

Since 1989, 2 excellent teaching achievements at the national level, 4 at the provincial level have been scored. There are 3 specialties --- background mathematics, computational mathematics, operational research and cybernetics --- which can confer degree of master.

Background mathematics has a postdoctoral research station and also has the right to confer Ph. D degree. It has been evaluated as the provincial key discipline.

There are 2 regular undergraduate courses, that is, mathematics and applied mathematics, information and computational science in the department. The former is mainly to cultivate the qualified personnel with the basic theories and methods, who will be able to solve practical problems with computers and engage in research and teaching work and the work of development, research and administration in the departments of production, management and administration. The latter is mainly to cultivate the advanced qualified personnel, who have the fine mathematical quality, master the basic theories and methods of informational science and computational science, use the learnt knowledge and the techniques to operate computers to solve the practical problems in the field of information and engineering computation, and engage in the research and teaching work of the departments of science and technology, education and economy .

The department pays much attention to the teaching work of basic theories, foreign languages and computers and stresses the cultivation of the abilities of application and bringing forth new ideas. The graduates from the department have a good reception among the employing units. The ratio of graduate students who are admitted to the universities maintains quite high.
