This
title is a continuation of An Atlas of Ancient Maps in China, which following up
the publications of An Atlas of Ancient Maps in China—the Warring
States~Yuan Dynasty (VolumeⅠ), Ming Dynasty
(Volume Ⅱ), and Qing Dynasty
(Volume Ⅲ). The previous
three volumes have been regarded by China’s historical geography authorities as
the highest-standard representative of the study in China’s ancient maps.
Mr.
Zheng Xihuang with the Institute for the History of Natural Science, Chinese
Academy of Sciences, one of the editors of volume I, II and III, is the editor
in chief of this atlas. As an academic work, the atlas has successively received
funds from National Natural Science Foundation of China and Science Publication
Foundation of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The atlas continues adopting the compilation system of the three previous volumes. Studies have been done on each map—producer, time of production, content, features, edition, origin, methods and its cartographical value. Bi-lingual illustrations (in English and Chinese) are available. Special theses are given to address important maps or cities, focusing on their development through dynasties since their emergence, expansion of city walls, extension of streets and lanes, center flux, population fluctuations, relationship of the vicissitudes of commerce and handicraft industry with economic development, as well as a thorough probe into their content and cartographical value.
This atlas collects totally 213 city maps of 82 cities drawn from late Neolithic age to the end of Qing Dynasty (1911).

The collection selected about 750 ancient and old maps of Beijing and was compiled into 4 volumes according to mapping areas and themes. Each volume is arranged according to the order of color map first and single-color map second.
The second volume has more than 180 maps of Beijing suburbs and counties, involving regional maps, town maps, architectural plans, etc. The maps are arranged according to current administrative divisions and drawing times.
The third volume keeps about 160 maps of Beijing in foreign languages (in the first half of the book) and views of famous scenic spots (in the second half of the book).

This collection of maps is
jointly compiled by the People's Government of Guangzhou Yuexiu District,
Guangzhou Municipal Archives Bureau and Chinese First Historical Archives. It
collects the early maps of Guangzhou for over 300 years from Kangxi 24th year of
the Qing Dynasty (1685) to 1949. It includes dozens kinds of maps of mansion
houses, areas, city streets, waterways, coast defenses of Guangzhou in history,
and records the characters of mountains, lakes, lands, sea and landforms of
Guangzhou region at that time from different angles. It also includes the
various marks of castles, local-style dwelling houses, markets, roads,
architectural forms, military and administrative organizations, barracks and
batteries. It records the true history of Guangzhou's natural and humane
landscapes, and we can observe Guangzhou's developing and changing situation of
history, geography, culture, commerce and communications from it. It is a true
record of old Guangzhou and provides reliable materials for the researchers and
lovers of maps.

This book is composed of three volumes with
edition binding of octavo. Each page is divided into two columns. Each column
has one map. The book has contents in the front and index in the back. The first
volume collects all 298 maps attached in Qianlong Daqing Yi Tong Zhi (Unified
Chorography of Qing Dynasty in Qianlong Period), which order is general maps
firstly and then provincial maps (border maps). After provincial maps (border
maps) there are prefecture maps and district maps. The second and third volumes
mainly includes all provincial chorography edited from the end of Yongzheng
Period to the beginning of Qianlong Period and maps collected from Shengjing
Tong Zhi (General Chorography of Shengjing) and Huang Yu Xiyu Tu Zhi (Royal Map
Collection of West Area) edited in Qianlong Period. Moreover, these two volumes
collect some county (scattered districts) maps and city plans from hundreds of
prefecture chorography, county chorography and other geographical books as
supplement. The order of 18 provinces in the second and third volumes is general
provincial maps firstly and then prefecture maps, natural and cultural sight
maps and some separated district (county level) and county maps last. City plans
are placed after its administrative region maps belonged.

The original map consists of eight hanging scrolls, 130 cm log and 28 cm wide. The maps are drawn in conical projection, with the poles at the center, and the equator at the edge of the two hemispheres. Scrolls 1 to 4 show the Northern Hemisphere, and scrolls 5 to 8, the Southern Hemispher. The borders of each map bear the inscriptions of Tang Jing of Xiangnan, Yu Hao of Haiyan Sixiang, and Ye Zipei’s brother Ye Yunshi, as well as Ye Zipei’s preface and agenda, plus annotations and textual studies on place names, altogether comprising approximately 30,000 words.

GUANG YU TU is the oldest extant comprehensive atlas of China,compiled by famous cartographer Luo Hongxian(1504-1564) during the Ming Dynasty with its basis on YU DI TU (Terrestrial Map) by Zhu Siben(1273—1333) of the Yuan Dynasty.This atlas use traditional Chinese measuring methods to draw on a grid scale on the maps and is bound in bookform.Due to its being rather Scientific and practical,GUANG YU TU had been re-engraved tine and again in 1555,1561,1564, 1566, 1572, 1579 and 1799,it produced a very far-reaching impact in China as well as in foreign countries,and up to the late 17th century,maps of China published in Europe were without exception drawn on its basis,such as Martin Martini (1614-1661)’s NOVNS ATLAS SINENSIS, this Martini’s atlas was also collected in Joan Blaeu’s LE GRAND ATLAS (1663, in Amsterdam).
