Brief Introduction to the School of Foreign Languages of Zhengzhou University The School of Foreign Languages of Zhengzhou University was founded in 1956.It now incorporates four undergraduate programs which are English (including English language and literature and English of science and technology), Russian, Japanese, and German. There are three educational degrees that the school is authorized to confer, the degrees of associate, bachelor and master. It provides post—graduate programs leading to a master’s degree in the areas of English language and literature, linguistics and applied linguistics in foreign languages, comparative literature and world literature. The school also undertakes the task of teaching foreign languages to undergraduates and postgraduates of non-English majors across the whole university. The school is rich in teachers, with a faculty of 183. It draws support from its large number of distinguished experts and scholars who have scored impressive academic results in the fields of English and American literature, translation theory and practice, linguistics in English language, comparative literature and intercultural communication studies. Each year, the school invites ten or more scholars from the UK, America, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan and the Commonwealth of Independent Countries to act as part-time teachers. The school emphasizes teaching quality and academic research. Its major task is to train students comprehensively with high levels of capability and competitiveness. More than 30% of the English and Russian majors passed the entrance examination to postgraduate schools in 2004. Graduates from the school are highly praised by recruiting units continually. The school also takes an active part in training cadres from administrative units across Henan province, directors of large and middle-sized enterprises and staff members whose work is concerned with foreign affairs. It has contributed greatly to the local and the national economic development. “The Center of English and American Literature Research” is a province-recognized research base in the field of humanities and social science studies. This Center, attached to the School of Foreign Languages, has first class research conditions and an abundance of capable people. It has made significant achievements and contributions. The school is the major Foreign Language Test Center authorized by the Ministry of Education in Henan province. Many tests such as the TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language), BEC (Business English Certificate), PETS (Public English Test System), BFT (Business Foreign Language Test) and Cambridge Young English Learners Test are held in the Center. There is a modern library with the collection of more than 50,000 books written in English, Russian, French, Japanese, German and Chinese and up to 100 kinds of influential language and literature newspapers and journals, both domestic and overseas. In addition, the school has a large number of audio and video teaching materials and twenty-nine multi-media language laboratories with advanced equipment.
